January 23 Message From Rev. Tam

Good Tidings OCC Family,

Sometimes God can teach us very meaningful lessons through the simplest things, even a droopy houseplant. The other day, I happened to notice something was off about my peace lily. Every day, I would walk past it and saw the leaves kept drooping lower and lower.

Naturally, I kept probing and thought, “What’s wrong? It has water.” Every time I checked the pot water gauge window, it showed it had water, so I couldn’t understand why my plant was looking so neglected. I asked it, “What is going on with you?” Yes, I talk to my plant, and I found out when we chatted, Laurie Hatch talks to her plants too, so I am not alone in this . Finally, I discovered the problem. The string designed to draw water from the supply to the roots was trapped and twisted, blocking the plant from receiving what it needed to be nourished. Immediately, I apologized to my plant, fixed its strand so that it could continue to draw water, and then placed it near the window so that when the sun came up, it would get the light it needed.

The next morning, my heart smiled, those drooping leaves were standing strong and tall and still God had more to show me. When I checked on the plant again the next day, I noticed another beautiful unfolding, the plant started blooming a flower lily which I haven’t seen since I first had the plant. What it reminded me of is that beautiful things can happen in the midst of what looks droopy in our situations and in the world if we will just connect with the Living Water.

Another lesson from my drooping peace lily is this: The Living Water is always available to us. However, sometimes something gets twisted or trapped, blocking us from receiving the spiritual nourishment we need. Just as my plant had water in its tank but couldn’t access it, we can be close to God, the Living Water, and still not take a drink. Jesus invites us in John 7:37-38 saying, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” It’s worth taking a pause to check our connection. What might be blocking the flow between you and the Living Water that you need? Once my lily’s connection was fixed, it didn’t just perk up. It bloomed with beauty I hadn’t seen in years. The same flourishing is available when we stay connected to the Living Water. My friends, the water is there. The question is, are you drinking?

Walking With the One Who is Our Living Water and The Lily of The Valley,
